Practical Life: Children are presented with Montessori materials beginning with practical life activities. These exercises are used to develop coordination and concentration as well as providing an independent approach to the prepared environment.
Sensorial: The classroom has materials designed to awaken the five senses. Presentations made by the teacher provide stimulation for the young child who will discover learning through the various senses.
Language: Letter sounds and sight vocabulary words are presented as soon as the child is able to concentrate and absorb the information. Sandpaper letters, with their appropriate sounds, are often presented to the three year olds. With several sounds mastered, the children are encouraged to read small phonetic words and eventually sight words. Writing is begun with the use of metal insets. An eagerness to experiment with words and language is encouraged. The child's imagination is awakened through the stories, songs, creative art, and music activities.
Mathematics: The mathematical mind of the young child is eager to explore numbers through step-by-step curriculum that range from sandpaper numbers through the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The various concepts and their mathematical relationships are best understood by the children through the well designed apparatus available to them.
Cultural: Children are introduced to various cultures through pictures, art, and music. Maps with related pictures of various countries are presented by the teacher. The children exchange customs through plays, recipes, and costumes.
