Montessori (1870-1952) established the Montessori method of
education. She was an internationally known Italian educator and
physician, who recognized that the years between two and six are
critical in the educational and social development of the child. It
is during this time that a child acquires a fundamental attitude
towards both the learning process and social behavior.
The Montessori classroom is designed to give a child freedom in a prepared
environment. The child is motivated from within and learns through
the successful repetition of the self-correcting materials in the
classroom. These materials are designed to awaken the five senses.
Presentations made by the teacher provide stimulation for the young
child who will discover learning through the various senses.
